Alberta’s Graduate Entrepreneur Stream: Supporting Local Talent

Alberta’s Graduate Entrepreneur Stream: Supporting Local Talent
|

Alberta values its local graduates and encourages them to contribute to the province’s economic growth through entrepreneurship. The Graduate Entrepreneur Stream under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is designed to support international graduates of Alberta post-secondary institutions who own and operate a business in the province.

What is the Graduate Entrepreneur Stream?

The Graduate Entrepreneur Stream aims to retain talented international graduates by supporting their entrepreneurial ventures in Alberta. This stream helps graduates transition from academic achievements to business success, fostering economic development within the province.

How to Qualify for the Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

To qualify for this program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Education: Completion of a degree or diploma from an Alberta post-secondary institution.

  • Work Experience: Minimum of six months of experience in managing or owning a business in Alberta.

  • Net Worth: No minimum requirement, but you must demonstrate the ability to sustain the business financially.

  • Investment: No minimum investment, but you must show financial capacity to support the business.

  • Business Plan: Submission of a solid business plan demonstrating the viability and economic benefit of the business.

  • Language Proficiency: Minimum CLB level of 7.

  • Ownership: At least 34% ownership if the business is located in an urban center, or at least 51% if located outside Calgary or Edmonton.

  • Job Creation: The ability to create new jobs for Canadians or permanent residents is advantageous.

Why Financial Strength Matters

Financial stability is crucial for demonstrating that you have the resources necessary to support your business in Alberta. This includes showing a solid financial background and the capacity to sustain business operations.

Ensuring Compliance with Source of Funds

Transparency in documenting the source of funds is critical. Detailed financial records and bank statements help confirm that the investment capital comes from a legitimate and stable source.

Focusing on Business Viability

Your business plan should clearly demonstrate the economic benefits and growth potential of your business. This includes outlining your business model, market strategy, and financial projections to showcase the viability of your entrepreneurial venture.
